CETONA

From Prehistory to the Middle Ages: a village full of History

You are browsing the section >> CETONA - Back to Homepage

Discovering one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Located at the base of the mountain of the same name, Cetona is a small village nestled between woods and countryside, which proudly maintains the evidence of its noble past. Fortified by Siena, it still maintains the original structure of the medieval settlements with a ring of houses that rises to the top of the hill, the fortress, the walls and the three doors. Each visit starts from the large Piazza Garibaldi, which, built in the 16th century with a particular oval shape, represents the access point to the village, from which all its alleys start.

This square hosts historic buildings of high architectural value and leads to other points of interest in the town, including the Collegiate Church of the Holy Trinity and the Museum for Prehistory of Monte Cetona, which documents the phases of human settlements in the territory, from the Paleolithic to the Bronze Age. In close connection with this Museum, there are two other essential destinations for prehistoric enthusiasts: the Belverde Archaeological Naturalistic Park and the Belverde Archeodrome. The first proposes a visit to cavities that open into the travertine and in which ancient populations celebrated funerary or cult rites, such as the cave of San Francesco, the caves of the Noce and the Poggetto. The second, on the other hand, is an educational path for children and teenagers that will allow you to discover a prehistoric village between settings, houses, structures and artifacts.

The archaeological park, among other things, is located a few steps from the convent of Santa Maria a Belvedere, which dates back to 1367. The convent stands at the foot of an imposing travertine cliff and boasts a beautiful cycle of 14th century frescoes. The visit to the historic center of Cetona necessarily ends with the climb up to the fortress where it is possible to enjoy a view of the valley and the roofs of the town, while nature lovers cannot miss the opportunity to walk among olive trees, cypresses and woods to get to the summit of the nearby Mount Cetona.
