Calcione - Lucignano

10.2
Km - Percorso in bici

Moving away from Castello del Calcione, the route continues towards the village of Lucignano for a short stretch of 10 km and mainly in a hilly area with little traffic.

Descend from the hill of Calcione and continue straight ahead towards Lucignano along a mixed trail of asphalt and unpaved country road. In the Campoleone area the path turns left into via Mazzini, allowing you to slowly climb towards the historic district of Lucignano along a panoramic road bordered by greenery and farmed fields. At the end of via Mazzini you will find the stadium on your right. To reach the historic district of Lucignano just continue straight ahead for 100 meters, then turn left. This village with its distinctive concentric ring plan boasts Etruscan origins, as evidenced by the various archaeological finds and necropolis found around the town. The medieval layout that has remained intact for centuries gives it a unique charm that has earned it various awards, such as the “Bandiera Arencione” (Orange Flag) of the Italian Touring Club and that of the “Borghi più Belli d’Italia”(Most Beautiful Villages in Italy) association. Although the whole historic district can be considered a point of interest in itself, Piazza del Tribunale offers an enchanting glimpse of this village and on the same square you can also find the Palazzo Comunale (town hall), also home to the Municipal Museum. Here you can admire paintings, goldsmiths, frescoes and sacred furnishings of the 13th and 18th Centuries, but above all the “Albero d’oro”(Golden Tree) or “Albero della vita”(Tree of Life): an arboreal-style reliquary about 2.60 meters high made of silver, gilded copper and enamels, decorated with small display cases, medallions and miniatures: a magnificent example of the art of goldsmith from this area which is also considered a good luck charm for couples and lovers.
