Civitella - Monte S.Savino

12.5
Km - Percorso in bici

Leaving Civitella, the route continues for 12.5 km towards Monte San Savino, a splendid medieval village of Etruscan origins.

The stretch is easy to travel and runs almost completely on an unpaved road immersed in the woods from which you can see suggestive views of the Valdichiana below, before the road descends along the ridge that leads to Ciggiano, a small village on the southwest border of the municipality of Civitella. Now immersed in the quiet of vineyards and olive groves, in the past it was an important commercial hub for the merchants who traded between Siena and Florence. Here you can visit the “Museo della Vite e del Vino” (Museum of Vine and Wine) which displays the stages of processing this product accompanied by an exhibition of historical tools. From Ciggiano the landscape gradually sheds its hilly vegetation to return to the cultivated fields of the valley until reaching the town of Monte San Savino. Ancient village of Etruscan origins, its historic center retains a typically medieval urban structure. Among the rich monumental heritage of the town we remember the Cassero, part of the old fortress, which today houses the Municipal Museum dedicated to a collection of traditional local ceramics. Impossible not to recommend stopping to eat a sandwich with porchetta, a product for which Monte San Savino is renowned throughout Italy. The town is also linked to the rest of the route’s railway connections, as the trains of the Arezzo-Sinalunga line pass through its station.
