Monticchiello - La Foce

9.1
Km - Percorso in bici

The next leg of our path is the one that from Monticchiello leads to La Foce - nine kilometers along the SP88 that switches to a low level traffic white road in the second half. The setting is still among the Valdorcia hills, which here exhibit the distinctive shapes of their gullies devoid of vegetation (due to erosion and washout of the clay-rich soil). We are at the heart of the Valdorcia Artistic, Natural and Cultural Park protected by Unesco for the excellent conservation of its landscape in perfect symbiosis with human activities. Mount Amiata and the Radicofani Fortress dominate the background as a reference point for almost the entire journey, which crosses the area of Castelluccio, a military fort of the 14th Century, then used as a storage building for grain by the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala and today an accommodation facility. La Foce was part of the same ancient complex and was an ancient 16th Century estate bought in the early 1900s by the English writer Iris Origo (laid to rest here in the small cemetery near the villa) who, in addition to transforming it into a modern farm, created a splendid Italian garden today open for tours.
